Artist's Bio

The artist was born in Ontario Canada but has lived in South Carolina since 1981 when she married her husband, Mitch. After working as a nurse in hospital and review settings, Mary is fulfilling her dream of working as an artist. She began with pencil sketches in High School. Through the years she has taken classes in watercolor, acrylic and oil. She currently works mainly in oil and pastel doing commission work. Her Artist in Residence opportunities have allowed her rich times of plein air painting. Each year since 2000 she has spent time in intense workshops with accomplished artists including Nelson Shanks and David Leffel. In May of 2007 she was honored to be part of the Columbia Open Studios when artists in the Columbia area opened their studios to the public.

Artist Statement

Art is God’s gift to us in troubled times. Art can give hope to a person or invoke a pleasant memory or time. My paintings reflect the essence of a place or the spirit of the person. I have an urgency to paint at this time in my life. I am honored to be able to paint and note my time and my surroundings and culture. Painting brings me great joy!
