Artist Statement
These paintings represent a body of work I have been engaged in creating over the past dozen years.
This group of multiphasic, biographical paintings are an homage to the humanistic spirit of the twentieth century, and to the creative, challenging, and complex indiviuduals, many of whom are considered Modernists. These are portraits, of course, but they are meant to convey more than just the physical appearance of an individual. They express the life and work of each person thought a multi-layered technique, juxtaposing images and ideas from various sources. A major part of the effort required to execute these portraits was to exhaustively reseach the individuals' lives and works. Thus, they are didactic paintings, bringing these figures to a wider audience and greater recognition for their contributions to the fabric of contemporary artistic and intellectual life. It is intended that this quality will generate a similar experience for the viewer, providing a stimulus for further investigation.
The choice of individuals was of course subjective, but not arbitrary. Those chosen, including Eisenstein, Gance, and Pound, shared elements of juxtaposition and simultaneity in their work. I beganwith this core group, subsequently reaching both backward and forward in time for other suitable subjects.
This series is very much an ongoing project wihch continues to absorb my interest. I am currently working on a portrait of Bela Bartok. In addition, I have begun a series of portraits of twentieth century dictators, which I believe will make an interesting and provocative corollary to the Modernists.
